A Terrifying Night: When a Nosebleed Turned into a Nightmare

by | 15 Oct 2023

Parenting is a journey of love, joy, and challenges. One fateful night, after a trip from New Jersey, my baby boy started having a nosebleed. At first, it seemed minor, but soon after cleaning up and trying to keep his head back, things took a frightening turn. The bleeding escalated rapidly, painting everything around us with a horrifying shade of red.

In a frantic state, I dialed 911, seeking urgent help. However, past experiences had made me wary. The 911 operator instructed me to make my baby lean forward, which felt confusing, contradicting what I knew about handling nosebleeds. This added to our anxiety and fear.

The first responders, the firefighters, arrived but seemed unsure of how to assist. The paramedics followed, providing us with gauze to clean the blood and trying to comfort my terrified baby boy. Time ticked by, the bleeding continued, and my little one was struggling, swallowing his blood, a truly heart-wrenching sight.

Eventually, we were rushed to the nearest hospital. Unfortunately, at the hospital, our priority seemed to shift from urgent medical care to gathering billing information. While my wife stood helplessly in the emergency room with our son, I had to leave to provide the required details. The bleeding persisted, and she did her best to keep wiping it off as it dripped from his nose.

Upon returning to the emergency room, I found two compassionate nurses desperately trying to stop the bleeding by firmly squeezing his nose. Miraculously, within just 15 minutes, the bleeding finally stopped. These nurses, empathetic and experienced, shared that they had dealt with similar cases before and advised us on what to do if it happened again.

Within an hour, we were on our way home, relieved that no medicine was necessary. However, I couldn’t help but wonder why the initial responders—the firefighters, paramedics, and the 911 operator—were unaware of this simple yet crucial technique to stop a nosebleed. If they had known, we could have spared so much blood and avoided immense horror and anxiety. This lack of a basic, life-saving technique is concerning and unacceptable, emphasizing the critical need for better education and training for all medical responders. It’s essential to equip them with the essential skills to handle common medical issues effectively, ensuring a better and less terrifying experience during emergencies.
